Kids’ parties, milestone dinners, surprise parties and adults-only nights: wording you can copy and send tonight.
A birthday invitation has one job: make the day feel like a big deal and tell people exactly where to be. Copy the example that fits, swap in your name, date and place, and send it. Every yes lands on one live dashboard, so the head count keeps itself while you handle the cake.

What should a birthday invitation say?
Whichever tone you choose, every birthday invitation needs the same bones: who, what, when, where, and when to reply.
Name and the number
For kids, the age is the headline: “Maya is turning FIVE!” For adults, check first: some love a big 4-0 on the invitation, some prefer “a birthday of unspecified but magnificent number.”
Start and end times for kids’ parties
Parents plan around pickup. “10:00 AM to 12:30 PM” is a kindness; an open-ended kids’ party is a hostage situation. For adult parties, an end time is optional: “until late” works.
Say how drop-off works
One line (“this is a drop-off party” or “parents welcome to stay”) answers the question every parent is already typing.
Surprise parties need logistics
Arrival deadline, parking instructions, and an explicit “not a word” line. If guests should arrive 30 minutes before the guest of honor, print both times.
An RSVP-by date, one to two weeks out
Food, cake and party favors all scale with the head count. Ask for replies a week or two before the party, and a one-click reminder chases the guests who have not replied.
Handle gifts gracefully
If you’d rather skip gifts, say so warmly: “Your company is the only gift we want.” For kids’ parties, an allergy note (“tell us about any food allergies”) matters more than any gift line.
Keep planning
Where the wording goes next: designs, guides and the rest of the library.
Wording etiquette for birthday invitations, answered plainly.
Should you put the age on a birthday invitation?
For children, yes. The age is half the news, and it helps guests pick gifts. For adults, ask the guest of honor first. Milestones like 40 or 50 are often celebrated loudly, but never assume; “celebrating Dana’s birthday” works perfectly well without a number attached.
How far in advance should you send birthday invitations?
Two to four weeks before the party. Kids’ parties and casual gatherings sit comfortably at two to three weeks; milestone parties with out-of-town guests deserve four or more. Digital invitations buy back time. Delivery is instant and RSVPs start arriving the same evening you send.
How do you say no gifts on a birthday invitation?
Say it plainly and warmly: “No gifts, please. Your company is the only present we want.” Put it on the invitation itself, not in follow-up messages, so every guest sees it. Some guests will bring something anyway; accept it graciously and move on to cake.
How do you make it clear a party is adults-only?
Put one unambiguous line on the invitation: “Adults only tonight, please” or “Grown-ups’ night out.” Addressing the invitation to the adults alone is too easy to miss. A clear line lets parents arrange sitters early instead of asking you one by one.
Ready when you are
Put this wording on a real invitation
Copy an example, make it yours in minutes, and hit send. Every RSVP tracks itself on one live dashboard, and only you ever see the guest list.
