Invitation wording

Engagement party invitation wording examples

She said yes, they said finally: wording for every way to announce it, from formal receptions to backyard toasts.

An engagement party invitation is the first official document of the wedding era. It announces the news and gathers the people who will hear every detail for the next year. Copy the wording that fits, swap in the couple and the date, and send it. RSVPs collect themselves, and the toast practically writes itself.

What should an engagement party invitation include?

Whichever tone you choose, every engagement party invitation needs the same bones: who, what, when, where, and when to reply.

Both names and the news

The couple, clearly named, and the word “engagement” doing its joyful work. If the party is the announcement, the invitation carries the secret instead. Say so explicitly.

Name the hosts

Traditionally the bride’s parents host first; today it’s anyone: both families, friends, or the couple themselves. Whoever hosts leads the invitation.

Keep the guest list wedding-safe

Everyone invited to the engagement party should expect a wedding invitation later. Celebrate broadly with an announcement; invite the party selectively.

Set the gift expectation

Gifts are not expected at engagement parties, and many hosts say so: “No gifts, please. Just come celebrate.” It puts guests at ease and keeps the focus on the news.

Soon is the whole point

Engagement parties happen within a few months of the proposal, while the news still fizzes. Send invitations two to four weeks ahead. Momentum is the theme.

Keep planning

Where the wording goes next: designs, guides and the rest of the library.

Frequently asked questions

Wording etiquette for engagement party invitations, answered plainly.

Who hosts an engagement party?
Traditionally the bride’s parents host the first engagement party, and other relatives or friends may throw later ones. Modern practice is open: both families together, friends, or the couple themselves all host comfortably. The invitation simply needs to name the hosts, whoever they are.
Are gifts expected at an engagement party?
No. Engagement gifts are optional in the United States, and guests should never feel obligated. Many hosts settle it on the invitation with one line: “no gifts, please, just come celebrate.” Some guests will bring a card or champagne regardless; that is affection, not obligation.
When should an engagement party be held?
Within one to three months of the proposal, while the news is still news. Later than that, the party competes with save-the-dates and shower planning. Send invitations two to four weeks ahead. Engagement parties run on momentum, not long lead times.
Does everyone at the engagement party get invited to the wedding?
Ideally, yes. Etiquette treats the engagement party guest list as a preview of the wedding list, and guests will assume as much. If the wedding will be tiny or far away, say so at the party. Expectations set early are expectations nobody trips over later.
