What should a Sweet 16 invitation say?

Whichever tone you choose, every Sweet 16 invitation needs the same bones: who, what, when, where, and when to reply.

The name and the number are the headline

Sixteen is the birthday with its own brand. Put it up top: “Chloe is turning 16!” Unlike adult milestones, nobody is shy about this number.

Print start and end times

Parents plan around drop-off and pickup. “7:00 to 11:00 PM” answers the question before it’s asked; an open-ended teen party invites a flood of texts.

Say who’s supervising

One line (“adults on site all evening”) is the sentence every parent is looking for. It costs nothing and settles everything.

A theme means instructions

“Wear white or neon,” “formal attire and a mask required”: if the party has a look, the invitation carries the assignment so nobody shows up unprepared.

Collect song requests with the RSVP

A custom RSVP question (“what song gets you on the dance floor?”) builds the playlist while the yeses roll in, and teens love answering it.

RSVP one to two weeks out

Food, favors and the glow-stick order scale with the head count. Ask for replies a week or two ahead, and let reminders nudge the silent.

Keep planning

Where the wording goes next: designs, guides and the rest of the library.

Frequently asked questions

Wording etiquette for Sweet 16 invitations, answered plainly.

What do you write on a Sweet 16 invitation?
Six things: the birthday teen’s name, the number sixteen doing its work in the headline, the date with start and end times, the venue with address, any theme or dress instructions, and an RSVP-by date. For parents’ peace of mind, add one line about adult supervision.
What is a Sweet 16 candle-lighting ceremony?
A tradition where the birthday teen lights sixteen candles, dedicating each to a person who shaped her first sixteen years: parents, grandparents, friends. If you’re holding one, hint at it on the invitation so honorees are present and the DJ knows to build in the moment.
Do parents stay at a Sweet 16 party?
Usually not. By sixteen, drop-off is the norm, with the host family and a few adults supervising. The invitation should still say so plainly: “drop-off party, adults on site, pickup at 11:00.” For formal family celebrations where parents are guests, the invitation invites them by name instead.
How far in advance should Sweet 16 invitations go out?
Three to four weeks: enough time for teens to coordinate rides and outfits, not so long that the party falls out of memory. For a formal venue event with a dress code, stretch to five or six weeks. Digital delivery means replies start the same night.
